provided 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to 1-3rd graders
at Pittman Elementary School.
Sept. 19, 2009 – Participated in Family Day in the Park (literacy
fair). We sponsored a whole area and our booth was done in the
typical Junior League way….. fabulous! Over 10,000 people attend
this event annually.
Oct. 2009 – Launched our new and improved One on One reading
program. Thanks to Pam Stone for revamping the program. We have
read 40+ hours as of Jan.
Nov. 2009 – Collected canned goods and clothes for the Emergency
Food Bank and Gospel Center Rescue Mission at our general meeting.
Dec. 2009 – Our wonderful provisionals adopted a family for
Christmas!
Dec. 2009 – We collected 30+ books for the children at Gospel
Center Rescue Mission for Christmas. Each child received an age
appropriate book wrapped with their name on it! We had extras to
donate as well!
Jan. 2010 – Assisted Pittman Elementary in starting a reading
challenge for k-8th grades. We put up a “reading wall” in the
multipurpose room to track the student’s progress. It’s very cute
and colorful…. Check it out next time you’re there!
We are making an impact by:
-
starting the 2009 Backpack Program which provided backpacks and
school supplies to over 300 children – some of whom were so
thankful to have “something of their own” in an otherwise
impoverished situation and setting them up with some supplies they
will need to get school work done
-
branding ourselves as a key supporter of literacy efforts in the
San Joaquin County by underwriting Recreation Alley and creating a
memorable Junior League booth at the Literacy Fair
-
committing a school year of having dedicated volunteers come and
listen to 1st grade children read … children that might otherwise
not have gotten that one on one attention at Pittman thereby
encouraging them to be confident, engaged readers
-
donating canned goods at our local food bank during this economic
downturn where the number of families in need swelled from 150
families to 250/300 families served each day, within the past year
-
setting up the Pittman Reading Challenge Wall which will be used to
track each classes’ reading progress and encourage a culture of
literacy at that school
